How do I keep my private registration if I scrap my car?

If you have a personalised registration that you’d like to keep, you’ll need to ‘retain’ it with the DVLA before your car is collected. Retaining your plate transfers the registration mark to an official certificate so you can use it on another vehicle in the future. You can do this using the DVLA’s dedicated service – either online or through the post.

How do I let the DVLA know I’m not using my car?

If your car isn’t being used or stored on the road, you might be entitled to a refund of any tax that has been paid. To declare your car as off the road, you’ll need to make a ‘SORN’ – Statutory Off Road Notification. You can do this quickly and easily online.
