Yes, they are. An ‘ATF’ or ‘Authorised Treatment Facility’ is the name given to a scrap yard that has proved it works within the rules and regulations surrounding the handling of scrap materials. It’s important to scrap your car at an ATF – as these are the only businesses who can officially start the DVLA destruction process.

Will it cause a problem if I change my mind about scrapping my car?

No, that’s okay. If you change your mind, we just ask that you let us know as quickly as possible. That way we can cancel your collection without anyone incurring any costs.

Will I lose my personal number plate if I scrap the car?

No, definitely not. To keep it, you’ll need to arrange to have the number plate officially removed from your car. The quickest way to do this is using the DVLA’s online service. When done, the registration will be removed from the car instantly. If you’d rather complete the process through the post, you can request the forms from the website too. It’s important that you make sure the whole process is complete before the car is removed.

What kind of car is an ‘ELV’?

Yes. ‘ELV’ is short for ‘End of Life Vehicle’ – the official term used to describe a car that is no longer suitable for use on UK roads. Generally, vehicles become ELVs due to general wear and tear, or damage that’s been incurred in an accident.
