Kia started off in the electric car market with its Soul EV, a good first attempt in the early days of EVs but not on a par with leaders like Tesla and Renault/Nissan. Then the e-Niro came along and quickly became really popular, but now Kia, together with its sister company Hyundai have really stepped things up. The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the World car of the Year in 2022, but Kia has this, the futuristic and sporty EV6.&nbsp;

It’s more practical than its coupe-like design would appear, great to drive and has a range of up to 328 miles in this, the GT-Line 77.4kWh rear-wheel drive version. Its build quality seems a match for premium German rivals and it comes with Kia’s usual long warranty and reliability promise. So is it as good as it looks?

The estate car is fighting a losing battle against the tide of SUVs, but it has always been a very popular choice in the UK and across Europe for its style and practicality. When it comes to going electric, there has only been one option, the MG 5, unless you want to splash the cash and go for a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. There are more electric estates coming this year though, including offerings from BMW, Peugeot and Vauxhall, but for now it’s all about the MG 5 which has undergone a facelift with improved styling, better interior materials and more tech.

If you’re looking for Volkswagen build quality and reliability but have decided the electric ID3 is just too unexciting for you, then fear not because zooming in from left field is this, the Cupra Born. It’s the ID3 with added Cupra style and dynamics and with tonnes more attitude.

Cupra is not a brand familiar to everyone, but it’s actually been a round for a while. Cupra was always the name for the sportiest of Seat models, but in recent years it has been turned into a brand on its own, one that appeals to the urban trendsetters and those looking for something a bit different.

Peugeot's compact hatches have always been firm favourites, right back to the popular 205. Admittedly the 207 wasn’t such a highlight, but in the latest generation of the 208, the style, fun and practicality is definitely back. It even impressed the judges to take the European Car of the Year title in 2020, ahead of the Tesla Model 3 and Porsche Taycan. This is the electric e-208 as Peugeot and Stellantis go the electrification route. It sits on the same platform as the Vauxhall Corsa-e and pricing for the e-208 starts at £31,345. It is a little bit pricey compared to the new MG4 or even larger cars like the Volkswagen ID3 and the Cupra Born, but is it any good?

2021 will go down as the year Volkswagen discovered its new ‘IDentity'. It launched the ID 3 we’re reviewing here and the ID 4 has not only just hit UK showrooms but it’s also been awarded World Car of the Year 2021. VW will follow this up with the ID 5 later this year along with a performance version of the ID 4.
