It was 20-years ago that we waved goodbye to the Escort and welcomed the Focus onto our roads. Since then, the family-sized Ford hatchback has been a favourite with UK drivers; the question is, does this completely overhauled car continue an impressive legacy?

In actual fact, the 2019 Focus isn’t just more of a good thing; it’s better than ever. New styling puts the Focus toe-to-toe with German rivals, and the drive quality, comfort, and practicality are very difficult to fault. You’re right to be apprehensive about a new A-Class; the old one was disappointing a best – a car that really didn’t feel worthy of its prestigious badge. Now though, the tide has turned; Mercedes has gone back to the drawing board and produced a car that’s better in every way.

Honda made a radical change with its latest Jazz but it seems to be paying off with good sales and a few awards to place on its dashboard. It’s a more youthful looking thing than before, trying very hard to ditch the retirement home or school run image and take on big rivals like the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa. It’s also a&nbsp;hybrid with a bit of electric running and&nbsp;good&nbsp;fuel consumption plus it has&nbsp;all the latest tech, even more so in this EX Style version.

Rarely does a week go by without news of another race car for the road, another supercar, hypercar or car that you can’t even drive on a public road. They appeal to the select few, collectors in the Middle East with a massive storage facility where they drive them once a year, but for most of us they’re just a desktop wallpaper.&nbsp;

Years ago a race car for the road was a little more down to earth. Think of the Cosworths, the Lancia Delta HF Integrale or the Lotus Carlton. Now those days are back and surprisingly the brand that has us really excited is Toyota. There’s a waiting list for the new homologation special GR Yaris, low mileage examples are already commanding a premium on the secondhand market and it’s being praised by just about everyone. And it’s a Toyota. Did we mention that already?

Naturally we grabbed one at the earliest opportunity to decide for ourselves if the hype is all justified. It is.

Kia might not have the household name appeal that you get with Ford, Vauxhall, or VW – but the Korean manufacturer has taken a fair-size chunk of the market share – and the Ceed has been a big part of making that happen.

The Ceed has dropped the awkward apostrophe out of its name – but the everything that’s made it great lives on; outstanding equipment levels, world-class safety performance, and attractive styling that puts the car on a par with the best in the class. The trouble is, the Ceed doesn’t quite handle as well as the opposition – but with such exceptional prices, should we care?
